The Promise of Life

Gemma Powers

The sunlight feels heavy, a burden of gold,

On a story I’m tired of watching unfold.

The waking is harder than closing my eyes,

Just waiting for darkness to quiet the skies.

A monotone rhythm, a gray-tinted view,

With nothing to hope for and nothing to do.

I wear a thin smile that is brittle as glass,

Watching the happy ones laugh as they pass.

The air is too thick and the silence too loud,

I’m lost in a crowd, just a ghost in a cloud.

A heart full of lead and a soul filled with rust,

Turning the dreams I once treasured to dust.

The minutes go by in a slow, steady crawl,

Behind a high ceiling and shadow-drenched wall.

It’s hard to find words for the weight of the day,

When the colors of living have all turned to gray.

Yet even in stillness, the breath remains deep,

A promise the weary are destined to keep.
